The firm of J W Brooke was founded in 1874 as an iron and brass foundry, which later began producing steam capstans and engines. A boatyard was opened on Lake Lothing, Lowestoft in 1911, producing motor launches, yachts and, during both World Wars, naval vessels.

The company was nationalised in 1977, forming part of the warship division of British Shipbuilders. It was re-privatised in 1985, as Brooke Marine Holdings Ltd. Trawlers, tugs, naval vessels and oil-field supply vessels were built, and the firm also moved into the luxury yacht market.

Following further changes of ownership and name (finally Brooke Yachts International), the firm was wound up in 1993.
